Mingalaba! Welcome to Myanmar

Welcome back to Fox Trotting - back by popular demand!! I've been in Myanmar for a few days now, so I thought I should write a post to update those who are interested.

Evelyn and I are staying at this rather nice hostel, Scott Hostel, in downtown Yangon. We have our own private room - which is a good thing since our apartment is not available until the 30th! The hostel is not super busy as it is offseason, so we were easily able to extend our time here.

Downtown Yangon is quite busy, loud and tbh, a tad smelly, so I am happy to say the apartment we found is in midtown Yangon near the famous Shwedagon Pagoda and Kandawgyi Lake - just a bit out the hustle and bustle.

In addition to apartment hunting the last couple of days, Evelyn and I went into the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) office to meet our coworkers and hear a little bit more about the work that they do. I am very excited to be a part of this team and contribute in some small way to their programming. I'm sure I'll explain more of the work at a later date, but in short, they facilitate workshops to educate lawyers, government prosecutors, local officials, civil servants and civil society organizations on rule of law principles.

Evelyn and I dove headfirst into Myanmar cuisine and are thoroughly enjoying the Shan noodles, 'salads' and all the fresh juices. I also spotted some jackfruit on the street yesterday - I can't wait to have an apartment and a kitchen! Through the hostel, we have found a Scottish-Burmese expat who was a chef and runs street food tours - so we decided to sign up for a breakfast street food tour and are really looking forward to it!

Yaw Min Gyi after the rain
Weather forecast: 100% chance of rain

Apartment hunting near the Shwedagon Pagoda. This is just a small part of the Eastern Entrance Staircase which is all beautifully carved teak.

Karaweik Palace on Kadawgyi Lake. It's a super touristy restaurant where apparently you can watch traditional Myanmar dance performances. We opted for an iced tea (well tea for me, and purple sweet potato latte for Evelyn) under a covered porch while it rained instead.
Sule Pagoda at night (only a block from Scott Hostel)
